Women's Basketball Drops 78-73 Overtime Thriller to Marist, Loss Snaps 34-game Home Win Streak

West Hartford, CT ?
The University of Hartford women's basketball team had its 34-game home win streak snapped by another mid-major power, the Marist Red Foxes, 78-73 in overtime at the Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion. Hartford falls to 14-9 overall, while Marist improves to 23-3 on the season.

The Hawks saw one of their largest shows of support at Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion, with an announced attendance of 3,217, the largest in-house attendance for a women's basketball game. The Hawks did have an announced sell out during a white-out event, with all tickets sold through the Caring Neighbor Program on December 4, 2004 versus Rhode Island. Through the support of the fans, the Hartford Athletics Department  ($6,150) combined with TD BankNorth ($3,000) to announce a donation of $9,150 dollars that will be contributed to the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund as part of the WBCA PinkZone event. Hartford is donating half of all ticket proceeds as well as funds raised from a silent auction and through straight donations from fans.

Hartford trailed by seven at the break, but battled back quickly to tie the game at 39 with just 3:13 played in the second half. The teams went on to trade buckets for the remainder of the half, with neither team leading by more than five and the teams knotted up on eight more occasions, including the one that sent the game to overtime, 66-66.

Two free throws from Lynzee Johnson tied things up for Marist and a last second jump shot from Katie Kelley was half way down before bouncing out to force overtime. The overtime was the first for Hartford since a 69-64 loss at Vermont on January 10, 2007.

Marist missed just one shot in the overtime period and was 6-of-11 in the last five minutes to force the victory, while Hartford's shooting struggled in the extra time, finishing 3-of-11.

For the game, Hartford was led by Erica Beverly who finished with her seventh double double of the season, with a season-best of 18 points and tying her season-high with 11 rebounds. She finished the game shooting 4-of-10 from the field and was 10-of-13 from the free throw line. Senior point guard Lisa Etienne was named the Nestle Purina ONE America East Player of the Game. She finished with 16 points while grabbing six boards and had four assists. She finished the game 6-of-18 from the field, 2-of-9 from three point territory and was 2-of-4 at the free throw line.

For the game, the Hawks shot 35.3 percent from the field (24-of-68), struggling in the first half (9-of-28, .321) and in the overtime period (3-of-11, .273).

Marist was led by Rachele Fitz, who finished with a game-high 27 points. She also completed the double double with 12 points. She shot 8-of-12 form the field and was 11-of-13 from the free throw line. Four other players finished in double figures for Marist, Lynzee Johnson with 12 and Julianne Viani, Erica Allenspach and Corielle Yarde, who all finished with 10 points.

The Hawks return to conference play with a mid-week trip to UMBC on Wednesday, February 18 at 7:00 p.m. Hartford defeated UMBC 85-52 in the earlier season match-up at Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion.
