Albany, NY - Junior forward Erica Beverly led four Hartford player in double figures to an 83-51 victory on the road against the Albany Great Danes on Saturday afternoon. Beverly finished the game with 14 points, 12 of which came in the first half. The Hawks improve to 16-9 overall and 11-1 in conference play, while Albany falls to 3-22 overall and 1-11 in America East action.
Beverly finished the game shooting 7-of-11 from the field as Hartford shot 53.4 percent for the game, 31-of-58. As a team, the Hawks' had a hot hand in the second 20 minutes, connecting on 17-of-26 shot for 65.4 percent. Joining Beverly in double figures was Ilicia Mathis and Lisa Etienne with 11 points each and Katie Kelley with 10 points, all of her points coming in the first half.
Hartford did not hit a three point basket in the first half but snapped back in the second half, connecting on all but one three pointer in nine attempts for 89 percent. The Hawks also shot well from the free throw line, hitting 13-of-15 attempts for 87 percent.
Defensively, Hartford forced Albany into 24 turnovers, finishing with 12 steals. Beverly and Etienne led the team with four steals each. The Hawks defense also held Albany to 33 percent for the game (17-of-52). Britney McGee led Albany with 21 points, including five three pointers. For the game, the Hawks held a 33-31 advantage on the boards, led by Mathis who finished with seven, a career-high for the rookie.
Albany struck first in the game with a jumper from Kim Clements, 40 seconds into the game. The Hawks then took the lead and extended it to seven early, 10-3, with just over 16 minutes to play before the break. After a Kelley jumper with 12:15 to play in the first half put Hartford up 14-7, the Hawks allowed a 7-0 run to force a 14-all tie with 10 minutes remaining before halftime.
Hartford never allowed Albany to regain a lead in the game, quickly extending its lead into double digits before the halftime break. A 16-2 lead gave the Hawks a 32-18 lead with 2:04 to play, before the Great Danes scored the final points in the half on two free throws with eight seconds remaining.
The Hawks first 20-point lead came on a three pointer from Jackie Smith off a feed from Diana Delva with 13:54 to play in the game. Two three pointers from McGee, separated by a free throw and layup for Hartford, put Great Danes within 19, 60-41, before a 13-1 run gave the Hawks a 31-point lead with just under five minutes remaining in the game.
Hartford returns to Chase Arena for a Tuesday night match-up with the only remaining undefeated team in the America East Conference, Boston University. The Hawks and Terriers will knot up in a televised showdown at 7:00 p.m.
