Beverly Breaks School Record in Women's Hoop's 59-32 Road Win at New Hampshire

The University of Hartford women's basketball team, behind a 31-point halftime lead scored a 59-32 road win at New Hampshire on Wednesday night. The win puts Hartford at 7-1 in conference play and 12-8 overall. The Hawks were led by freshman guard Ilicia Mathis and junior forward Erica Beverly who both finished in double figures. Beverly also broke the school record for blocks in a single season, stuffing five New Hampshire shots.

Beverly entered the game needing just one block to pass Kenitra Johnson for the single season record. She smashed the record in the early minutes of the game with back-to-back blocks on the same possession, and then added three more in the second half. Her record setting block came with 16:19 to play on a three point attempt by Amy Simpson.

Mathis led all scorers in the game with 16 points, 15 of which came in the first half. She played 16 minutes in the first half finishing 5-of-7 from the field and perfect in all four of her three-point attempts, while also hitting the only free throw she took. Beverly was the only other Hartford player to finish the game with double figures with 13. Twelve of Beverly's points came in the first half as she was a perfect 5-of-5 in 13 minutes.

Other leading scorers for Hartford were MaryLynne Schaefer and Jenna Peterson who both finished with eight points. The eight points is a career-high for Peterson who finished the game shooting 3-of-5 from the field and was perfect in two three-point attempts. The Hawks finished the game shooting 36 percent from the field (21-of-59), but shot lights out in the first twenty minutes connecting on 17-of-29 for 59 percent. In the early going in the first half, the Hawks hit eight of their first 10 shots.

Hartford took its 31 point lead into the break courtesy of a 24-2 run over the final 11 minutes of the half. The run began with back-to-back three pointers from Mathis, with New Hampshire's only points coming on two free throws from different players seven minutes apart. Hartford held the Wildcats without a basket for 16:06 spanning both halves.

Despite starting the second half without scoring a basket for the first 13 minutes, the Hawks defense continued to keep the lead large. Hartford's first four points of the second half all came at the free throw line with a three pointer from Schaefer with 6:17 to play the first field goal of the half. Hartford's biggest lead of the game came with 2:37 to play, following a 7-0 run that saw five points come from Peterson on a layup and a three pointer.

The Hawks return to Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion for a Saturday afternoon matinee against the Maine Black Bears. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Hawks picked up a 77-46 road win against the Black Bears in the first meeting between the two teams.
