West Hartford, CT - University of Hartford women's basketball seniors Lisa Etienne and MaryLynne Schaefer have been selected to attend the seventh annual “So You Want to be a Coach” program hosted by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The two-and-a-half day workshop will be held in conjunction with the WBCA National Convention on April 3 through April 7 in St. Louis, Mo.
To participate, potential candidates must have exhausted her final year of basketball eligibility at a four-year institution or have graduated within the past year. In addition, the participant's head coach must nominate them and must be an active WBCA member. Each participant is selected based on their academics, contributions to women's basketball on and off the court, professional resume and a written recommendation from their head coach.
The WBCA has been a cornerstone in developing an organization that meets the needs of women, while promoting the game of basketball and its development, as well as unifying coaches on every level. The “So You Want to be a Coach” program was designed to increase the amount of minorities in the coaching profession, by providing a workshop based on educational and professional principles to those interested in the field.
The coaching lessons shared with these participants will assist in identifying, recruiting and retaining minority women in the profession of coaching. At this year's workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to meet and learn from some high level professionals such as University of Washington assistant coach Fred Applin, Marist College assistant coach Keila Whittington, St. Louis University head coach Shimmy Gra-Miller and many others.
Schaefer, a Centreville, VA native, currently holds the school record for all-time three-pointers with 214 in 126 career games at Hartford. Etienne, a Norwalk, CT native, has been the Hawks' starting point guard since transferring to Hartford from Penn State following her freshman season. She has dished out 279 career assists, which ranks seventh in the career record book at Hartford, and she currently is third on the team in scoring, averaging 9.9 points-per-game. The two seniors will graduate from Hartford in May, 2009.
