West Hartford, Conn. – Despite holding the Marist women's basketball team to 40 points through the first 30 minutes of the game, the Hartford women's basketball team fell to 1-8 overall with a 57-40 loss to the Red Foxes in front of 1,254 People at the Chase Family Arena on Tuesday night.
The Hawks were led by senior guard Mary Silvia who finished with 12 points, while sophomore guard Daphne Elliott added 11 points and a career-high eight rebounds and was named the Nestle Purina ONE America East Player of the game. Elliott also finished with two blocks and two steals, leading the team in both categories.
Hartford managed just seven points over the final six minutes of the game after pulling within a three-possession deficit on a free throw from freshman Alyssa Englert. With the Hawks down 40-32, Marist answered by scoring six unanswered basket as the Hawks went without a bucket for more than two-and-a-half minutes.
After opening the scoring with the first bucket, a three pointer from Elliott with more than three minutes gone in the game, the Hawks allowed the next eight points to Marist who took a lead they would never relinquish. The Hawks manages to tie the score once over the next 36 minutes with a three pointer from Silvia with just under seven minutes remaining before the break.
Back-to-back three pointers for Marist's Leanne Ockenden opened up a 22-15 lead with 3:50 remaining before halftime as the Hawks would manage just one more basket before the intermission, a jumper from sophomore post Nikkia Smith. Marist would answer with two more buckets to take a 26-17 advantage into the locker room.
The Hawks would manage one small run in the second half to get as close as they would for the remainder of the game, six, with 12:42 remaining in regulation. That run consisted of a jumper from Nikkia Smith and a three pointer for Silvia. The Red Foxes would answer right back with the same combination of buckets.
The Hawks finished the game shooting just 28.3 percent, not managing more than 29 percent in either half. Through the first 20 minutes, Hartford shot 27.3 percent with just six buckets in 22 attempts. The would go into the halftime break with only 17 points, the fourth time this season the Hawks have scored just 17 first half points.
The second half saw only one more bucket overall for the Hawks, finishing the half at 29.2 percent (7-of-24). Marist's shooting picked up in the second half, finishing the final stanza with a 52.4 percent effort (11-of-21) and shooting 43.8 percent for the game (21-of-48). Marist's Kate Oliver led all players in the game with 13 points and was the only Red Fox in double figures.
Hartford will play its next game on the road when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the Temple Owls in a return game following a Hawks 65-54 victory in West Hartford a year ago. Hartford and Temple are scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip with the game available on the flagship station for Hartford women's basketball WWUH 91.3 FM as well as ESPN Radio 1410 AM.
