FINAL RESULTS
BURLINGTON, Vt.—Junior
Tiffany Harrison and senior
Erik Quitzau raced their way to school records Saturday at the University of Vermont, pacing the Hartford indoor track and field teams at the season-opening tri-meet against Vermont and Merrimack College. Harrison posted her school-best mark in the women's 300-meter dash while Quitzau turned in his record time in the men's 55-meter hurdles. Both Hawk squads finished third at the meet as the women scored 32 total points and the men earned 25 points.
"The team has been training hard over the last few months and today we got our first chance at competition," head coach Steve Walsh said after the meet. "The freshman got their first taste of collegiate competition and the upperclassmen continue to improve. With two new school records and some outstanding performances, we had a great opening to our indoor season."
Harrison was a key contributor Saturday with one of those school records while also posting a pair of wins in the 300- and 400-meter dashes. In the 300, Harrison raced to a school-record time of 42.49, .07 seconds ahead of the previous Hartford-best time, set by
Priscilla Appiagyei in 2010. Harrison also finished atop the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 59.91.
Junior
Sam Crisafulli and freshman
Savannah Brown also posted event wins at Vermont. In the women's 1,000-meter run, Crisafulli paced the field around the track in 3:03.24. Brown turned in a win in the women's triple jump, bounding to a mark of 10.32 meters (33 feet, 10.25 inches) in her first meet as a collegian. Brown finished ahead of teammate Ally Thatcher, who finished second in the event with a mark of 9.82 meters (32 feet, 2.75 inches).
On the men's side, it was senior
Erik Quitzau highlighting the Hawk performances on the track with a program record in the 55-meter hurdles. He turned in a time of 8.24 seconds, .01 seconds better than the mark set by Cody Adamson in 2011. Quitzau finished fourth overall in the event.
Freshman
Lawrence Williams also had a strong day, posting a win in the 400-meter dash in his first college meet. Williams covered the distance in 49.30 seconds to finish first. Williams also finished third in the 300-meter dash.
The Hawk men also received top performances in the triple jump as the Hawks turned in the top-three marks in the event. Senior
Rashawn Providence took first place in the event, getting out to a mark of 13.48 meters (44 feet, 2.75 inches). Freshman
Jordan Crump-King took second place with a mark of 13.35 meters (43 feet, 9.75 inches) and sophomore
Robert Pepper finished third at 13.16 meters (43 feet, 2.25 inches).
Hartford has one more event on its indoor schedule prior to winter break. The Hawks travel to Boston, Mass., for the Jay Carisella Invitational on Saturday, December 14.
