THE LEAD: The University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped a 62-28 decision at Boston College inside of Conte Forum on Wednesday night. Junior
Deanna Mayza, who paced the squad with eight points, netted five in the first quarter as the Hawks held an early 5-0 edge. But the Eagles shook off a rough start that featured six early turnovers coupled with a 0-of-8 effort from the field, and took a 12-8 edge before the end of the first quarter. Behind 45.6 shooting, BC pushed its lead to 31-12 at the halftime break and never looked back.
La'Trice Hall, a junior, added five rebounds in the losing effort while Emilee Daley paced a pair of Eagles in double-figures with 14 points.
FIRST HALF:The Hawks got off to a great start defensively, as they forced Boston College into six turnovers while holding the Eagles to an 0-for-8 start from the floor. During that stretch, Lee opened up the contest with a layup before Mayza converted on a three-pointer to provide Hartford with a 5-0 advantage midway through the opening stanza.
BC turned things around in the latter part of the first after it received its first point from on a front-end make from the charity stripe from Kailey Edwards with 3:07 left. At the 2:26 mark, Nicole Boudreau provided the first made bucket of the night for the Eagles on a jumper with 2:26 to go as BC ended the first quarter by converting on its final six attempts. A 7-0 run, capped by a Coulombe layup, put the Eagles in front by a 12-8 count at the end of the stanza.
The Eagles continued to keep the pedal to the medal, as they opened up the second by making six of their first seven shots. Hartford was outscored, 19-4, during that stretch, with
Mikayla Delcastegne and Mayza providing the Hawks' lone scores. Behind 57.1 percent second-quarter shooting, BC built a 31-12 advantage at the break. .
SECOND HALF:Out of the intermission, the Hawks managed to cut into their deficit.
Katelyn Skinner and BC's Katie Quandt opened the third by trading baskets, before Reaves made it a 33-16 game with a layup at the 6:26 mark. But that would be the closest the Hawks would get, as BC used an 11-2 run to extend the lead to 44-18 with 2:18 remaining.
Two of BC's five three-pointers came in the final stanza, as the offense continued to roll for the Eagles. In the final minute, Daley's deep triple gave the home squad its largest lead of the game (34) at 62-28.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:- The Hawks turned in a season-low percentage from the floor in the first half, as they converted on 5-of-28, for 17.9 percent.
- Overall, Hartford struggled to convert from the field, as it shot 20.3 percent (12-of-59) from the floor and 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from three. Both of those marks were season-lows.
- BC went 45.6 percent on the night (26-of-57), going 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from long range.
- Hartford forced BC into 19 turnovers, marking a season-high for the Hawks' defense.
- The Hawks were held without a free throw attempt on the night. The Eagles made just six trips, making five of those attempts for 83.3 percent.
- Eight of the Hawks' 28 points came off of those BC miscues.
