DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore point guard Deanna Mayza finished with 19 points, leading the University of Hartford women's basketball team (13-14, 7-6 America East) in a 55-50 loss at New Hampshire on Wednesday night at Lundholm Gymnasium.
Joining Mayza in leading Hartford was freshman Darby Lee who completed her first double figure scoring game of the season with 13 points as she led the shooting efforts going 6-of-8 from the field. Mayza finished the game 8-of-12 from the field including one three pointer, while also making 2-of-2 attempts at the free throw line.
Overall for the game, the Hawks shot 38 percent from the field on 19-of-50, while making three field goals from outside the three point arc. As a team, the Hawks also finished 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
· Sophomore point guard Deanna Mayza led all players with 19 points, finishing the game 8-of-12 from the field including one three pointer. She also finished 2-of-2 at the free throw line, while grabbing three rebounds and dishing out one assist.
· Freshman Darby Lee rounded out the Hawks leading scorers with 13 points, her first career double figure game of the season. Lee led the Hawks from the field as she missed just two of her eight field goal attempts, while also adding a free throw on a three point play early in the second half.
· The Hawks trailed New Hampshire in the battle of the boards by a 32-30 final margin led by sophomore Morgan Lumb who pulled down seven boards. Senior Cherelle Moore finished just behind her with six rebounds.
· As a team, the Hawks finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field, making 19-of-50 attempts from the field. Three of those 19 field goals came from beyond the three point arc as the hawks finished 3-of-14 overall for 21.4 percent. At the free throw line, the Hawks finished 9-of-11 for 81.8 percent.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
· The Hawks second lead of the game at the midway point of the opening half thanks to five unanswered points on a three pointer from senior Amber Bepko and a layup from freshman Janelle Harrison. Bepko's three pointer came on an offensive rebounding opportunity, while Harrison's basket came courtesy of a feed across the lane from sophomore point guard Deanna Mayza.
· Sophomore Morgan Lumb provided the Hawks next lead of the game after she rattled off five straight points. The first basket from Lumb came from beyond the three point arc thanks to a feed from Bepko. She followed that just under a minute later with a perfect 2-of-2 effort at the free throw line which resulted in a 16-15 Hartford lead.
· Mayza would close out the half scoring the Hawks final six points before heading into the locker room, with those six points leading the team in the first half. Lumb followed her with five first half points and senior Cherelle Moore added four. Lumb also led the Hawks with four rebounds.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS
· Sophomore point guard Deanna Mayza scored the Hawks first four points in the second half to be the first Hartford player in double figures, her 14th game of the season in double figures.
· Freshman Darby Lee would follow Mayza's first four points by scoring the Hawks next nine points, to secure the first double figure game of her career.
· Lee and Mayza both finished with a team-high 11 second half points with Lee leading the shooting efforts as she missed just one of her six field goal attempts over the final 20 minutes. Mayza finished the second half 6-of-9 from the field.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
· Darby Lee is just the second freshman to record double figures in the scoring column this season, joining classmate Janelle Harrison who chipped in 10 on the road at Lafayette.
· Sophomore Morgan Lumb led the Hawks in rebounding with seven boards, just her third game of the season leading the team on the boards, and the first for her since the start of conference play.
· Sophomore point guard Deanna Mayza led all players in the game with her 14th game in double figures with 19 points.
