Softball Falls in Series Finale at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Hartford softball team dropped Monday's series finale at UMBC as it suffered a five-inning, 10-1 loss. The Hawks drop to 0-3 in America East action and 1-20 overall while the Retrievers improve to 3-0 in the conference and 13-11 overall.

The Hawks scattered seven hits in the contest, two of which came off the bat of Marisa Ferguson. The sophomore concluded the three-game series batting 4-of-7 with an RBI while sophomore Danielle DeMarco went 3-for-5 for a .600 batting average over the conference set.

UMBC opened up the scoring by plating a single run in the bottom half of the first before scratching two more runs across home in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and one out recorded in the first, Kelly Lane put UMBC in front by a 1-0 count with a fielder's choice that plated Danielle O'Neill, who previously earned a walk to get on base. Two innings later, a two-out, bases loaded single up the middle by Courtney Reinfeld brought in a pair of runners to extend the home team's lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, UMBC put the game out of reach by plating seven runs to take a 10-0 lead. Hartford managed to grab one run back in the top part of the fifth, but wouldn't pull any closer than nine runs, allowing the mercy rule to go into effect in the fifth. Freshman Elizabeth Newkirk scored that lone run of the game for the Hawks, as she led off the frame with a triple to right field and crossed home on the same play after capitalizing on a throwing error in UMBC's outfield.

The Hawks also posted a scoring threat earlier in the contest. In the top of the second, DeMarco and senior Peyton Fisher each singled with one out recorded in the frame. A sacrifice bunt from senior Margaret Betz would push both runners into scoring position, but the Retrievers would safely get out of the jam as starting hurler Jessica Holte struck out the next Hawk batter to end the inning.

Holte improves to 7-5 after conceding one earned run on seven hits while issuing one walk. For the Hawks, junior Elizabeth Batsinelas, who worked the first 3.0 innings, suffered the loss. She conceded six earned runs, seven total, on seven hits and six walks while striking out one.

The Hawks return to action with back-to-back non-conference doubleheaders, starting with two games at Siena on Friday, April 2. First pitch from Loudonville is scheduled for 2 p.m. Following the twinbill with the Saints, Hartford remains on the road for its next two games as it heads to Fairfield on Sunday, April 4 for a 12 p.m. start time.
