THE LEAD: The University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped a 58-35 decision at first-place Stony Brook on Monday evening. Sophomore
Darby Lee paced the Hawks with 14 points, while junior
La'Trice Hall contributed eight rebounds and four points in the losing effort.
Stony Brook, which improves to 5-0 in the America East, placed two players in double-figures. Ogechi Anyagaligbo had 16 points and eight rebounds to pace the Seawolves in both categories. Adding 10 points and seven rebounds was Elizabeth Manner.
FIRST HALF:Hartford took an early lead over Stony Brook, using a turnover produced out of its full-court pressure to go up, 8-5, with 6:26 left in the opening quarter. But the Seawolves picked up the pressure, as they used two Hawks' miscues to fuel an 8-0 run that put them in front with a 13-8 advantage. With a quick take to the rim, freshman
Lindsey Abed would close the gap down to three before the end of the stanza at 13-10.
Opening the quarter with a 6-0 spurt, the Seawolves pushed their lead into double-digits for the first time in the contest with an Anyagaligbo triple with 2:11 remaining until halftime. Hartford was able to cut into the deficit before the break, though, as
Darby Lee dropped in back-to-back layups to make it a 24-17 game heading into the locker room. Â
SECOND HALF:After the break, Hartford continued to cut into Stony Brook's lead. Lee closed the gap down to five on two occasions, delivering a jumper 26 seconds in before knocking down a pair of free-throws less than a minute later. But Stony Brook, which posted a 1-for-4 start from three-point land in the first half, started to heat up from long range. Three-pointers on back-to-back possessions pushed the advantage back to 11 (32-21). The Seawolves would go 4-for-7 from downtown in the third to extend their lead to 39-26 by the end of the quarter.
Stony Brook started the fourth with a big rally, opening the stanza with a 12-2 run to go up, 51-48. The Seawolves would not look back from there, as they continued to build on their lead late in the game.
