THE LEAD:
Â
Four Hawks scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough for the University of Hartford women's basketball team, as it fell to visiting Delaware, 72-63, on Monday night. Nicole Enabosi recorded a double-double to pace the Blue Hens with 22 points and 17 rebounds.
Â
Senior Janelle Harrison scored 13 points to pace the Hawks, while sophomore Sierra DaCosta and junior Lindsey Abed contributed 12 apiece in the losing effort. Rookie Jade Young had a strong showing for Hartford, adding 10 points and a game-best six steals.
Â
FIRST HALF:
Â
Four early turnovers by Hartford allowed Delaware to jump out to a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest. But defense got the Hawks back into the game, as a 13-2 run gave Hartford a 19-15 lead heading into the second quarter. Hartford forced six turnovers during that stretch, which included 10-straight points from DaCosta and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by senior Mary Pattison.
Â
The Hawks' defense continued to rattle Delaware in the second quarter. During that stretch, the visiting squad threw the ball away 15 times, allowing Hartford to go up by as many as eight points (27-19) with 7:20 to go. The Blue Hens did make a run down the stretch, using eight-unanswered points to tie up the game at 27-27, but Hartford regained a four-point edge at the break by scoring eight of the final 12 points of the half.
With 12 points, DaCosta led scorers at the break.
Â
SECOND HALF:
Â
Out of the intermission, the Hawks and Blue Hens exchanged buckets to the tune of a 46-42 Hartford lead with 5:40 to go. But Delaware picked up the pace for the remainder of the half. Holding the Hawks to just one field goal – an Abed layup at the 2:47 mark – the Blue Hens used an 18-2 run that included 10-straight points over the last 2:12 to push ahead by 12.
A Jade Young three-pointer would have closed the gap down to nine heading into the fourth, but the triple did not beat the buzzer, allowing Delaware to preserve its 60-48 advantage. The Hawks remained within striking distance in the final quarter, but were unable to close the gap beyond nine points during the final stretch.
