Bears Take Two from Softball

THE BASICS:

GAME 1 RESULT: Brown 9, Hartford 1 (6)
GAME 2 RESULT: Brown 5, Hartford 1

THE LEAD:
The Brown softball team took a pair of games from Hartford on Wednesday afternoon at Brown Softball Field. It marked the first contests in the history of the new facility, which debuts this season for the Bears.

GAME 1: BROWN 9, HARTFORD 1
Danielle DeMarco went 2-for-3 and Elizabeth Newkirk had an RBI single, but Brown got off to a quick start and never looked back in a 9-1 victory.
 
Christina Andrews went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Julia Schoenewald went 1-for-3 with three RBI in the win for the Bears. Meghan Wimmer allowed just one run on four hits in six innings to collect the victory, while Isabelle Gerone was carded with the loss.
 
HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 1:
• Brown got off to a fast start, plating five runs on five hits and an error, highlighted by two-run triples from Schoenewald and Andrews.
• The Hawks got on the board in the third with Gerone hitting a leadoff single, stealing second and coming home on a Newkirk single up the middle.
• The Bears added an unearned run in the third and a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-1.
• Brown ended the game after six innings by plating a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth for a 9-1 victory.
 
GAME 2: BROWN 5, HARTFORD 1
Meghan Wynn delivered an RBI double and Kylie Dazalla had two hits, but a strong performance by Katie Orona in the circle led Brown past the Hawks in game two. Orona allowed one run in seven innings of work for the Bears in the win.
 
Annie McGregor went 2-for-3 with two RBI and she and Raquel Blanchard each hit home runs in the victory. Kaitlin Okimoto added three hits as well for the Bears. Melissa Pereira was credited with the loss for the Hawks.
 
HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 2:
• Hartford struck first in the game with a run in the top of the second, as Wynn sent a double to right center to score Bianca Ross, who had led off the inning with a single.
• Brown countered with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead.
• The Bears tacked on solo runs in the third and the fourth, the former on a McGregor RBI triple, for a 4-1 edge.
• Brown added a run in the sixth on an RBI infield single to result in the final score.
 
UP NEXT:
The Hawks will take on Quinnipiac with a Thursday doubleheader in Hamden, slated for a 2 p.m. start. Hartford then opens conference play over the weekend with a three-game series against UMass Lowell. The home opener will be a doubleheader on Saturday slated for a 1 p.m. start followed by a single game at noon on Sunday.
