THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford women's basketball team continued its hot shooting, as they routed UMass Lowell, 81-42, on Wednesday night in Lowell. The Hawks shot over 50 percent from the field for the third time in four games.
Senior Janelle Harrison led five Hawks in double figures, scoring a season-best 22 points and eclipsing the 750-point mark of her career. Joining Harrison with double-digits was junior Alexia Douglas (17 points), junior Lindsey Abed (13), freshman Brielle Wilborn (11) and senior Darby Lee (10).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a scoreless first three minutes, junior Kelly Douglass ignited the scoring with a key three that started an 11-2 Hawks' run. The River Hawks answered with a quick six points of their own before Hartford went on a 7-1 run to take a 20-9 lead at the end of the opening stanza.
- The Hartford defense flexed its muscles in the second quarter, holding UMass Lowell to just two points to take a commanding 33-11 lead into the break.
- Both teams exchanged runs in the third period. After the River Hawks went on a 6-2 run in the early stages, Hartford answered with 10-2 run of its to push ahead by 28 points at 50-22. UMass Lowell scored the final four points of the quarter, but the Hawks would take a comfortable, 50-26 lead into the fourth.
- The Hawks nearly doubled their lead in the final stanza, closing out the game with an 18-4 run. During that span, Wilborn contributed seven of her career-best 11 points, giving the Hawks the 81-42 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
- Holding the River Hawks to just 15 field goals, Hartford outscored UMass Lowell from behind the arc (21-6).
- UMass Lowell held the advantage from the line (10-8) and on the boards (39-32).
- The Hawks forced a season-high 21 steals.
- The win marked the Hawks' fifth-straight against UMass Lowell, improving their record to 8-1 all-time.
- The Hawks extended their winning streak to four games, and have won eight of their last nine.
- This is Hartford's largest victory since the Hawks beat UMBC, 85-45, in 2010.
- Abed extended her double-figure scoring streak to four games, while Lee (3 games) and Douglas (2) also extended their streaks.
- Harrison and Lee each played in their 100th career game as Hawks.
