THE LEAD:

A lockdown effort on the defensive end led the University of Hartford women's basketball team to a commanding, 85-49 win against visiting New Hampshire on Wednesday evening. Senior Janelle Harrison scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Hawks, who recorded a season high in scoring in the victory.

Hartford forced UNH into 26 turnovers on the evening and scored 30 points off of those miscues. Junior Lindsey Abed added 19 points for Hartford, while Oliva Healy paced the Wildcats in the losing effort with 15 points and nine rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Hawks' defense was active in the first quarter. Scoring 11 points off of 11 UNH turnovers, Hartford built a 20-10 advantage with 96 seconds left. But the Wildcats managed to cut the Hawks' lead in half, ending the stanza with five-unanswered points from Carlie Pogue.
  • A 6-of-7 start from the field to start the second led to a commanding 12-0 Hartford run that quickly pushed the lead to 17 less than four minutes into the stanza. The Wildcats were held to just six points – a pair of field goals and two free throws – for the remainder of the half before an Abed triple inside the final minute sent the Hawks into the locker room with a commanding 42-21 lead.
  • The Hawks came out of the gates firing in the third quarter. Abed, Harrison and Young combined for each of Hartford's 20 points in the first seven minutes of the stanza as the Hawks' lead quickly ballooned to 37 (60-23) with 3:05 remaining in the stanza. The Wildcats were held to just one field goal from Kat Fogarty during that quarter, which featured a 59-percent effort from the field for the Hawks.
  • Taking a 39-point advantage into the fourth quarter, a layup by senior Darby Lee provided the Hawks with their largest lead of the game – and the season. Her bucket at the 5:57 mark made it a 77-36 advantage heading down the stretch.

  • Freshman Jade Young, who added seven points and six assists, matched a career high in rebounds with nine.
  • Hartford had a hot hand from the field, going 37-of-70 for 52.9 percent. That clip included a 7-of-16 effort from behind the arc (43.8 percent).
  • The Hawks' defense held UNH to just one three-point field goal in 17 attempts (5.9%).
  • Freshman Jada Lucas recorded a career-high five points in 10 minutes, including her first career three-pointer.
