Hawks Grind Out Victory Against William & Mary

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Graduate student Ella Awobajo scored in double-figures for the fourth time this season, as Hartford battled to the 50-45 victory over William & Mary Friday night.
 
Awobajo finished with a game-high 15 points, as Hartford improves to 3-5 on the season. Eva Hodgson scored a team-high 14 points, as the Tribe fell to 3-3 overall.
 
HARTFORD 50 WILLIAM & MARY 45
After holding a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Tribe pushed their lead to four (21-17) on a jumper from Hodgson with 5:41 remaining in the half. The Hawks answered going on a 11-0 run, capped off by a three pointer by senior Lindsey Abed with just over three minutes remaining in the second quarter, making the score 28-21. William & Mary, however, scored the final seven points of the period to tie the game at 28 heading into the locker room.
 
With both teams playing stingy defense in the third quarter, neither team could find a rhythm as they combined for 14 points in the period. Hartford managed to move into the fourth quarter holding a 37-33 lead and pushed it to five after a layup by Awobajo made the score 39-34 with 8:13 remaining. William & Mary tied it one last time (41-41) with just over six minutes on the clock, but the Hawks went on a 9-4 run to close out the game and secure their third win of the season. 
 
NEWS AND NOTES
  • With her four three-pointers, Abed now has 162 career three-pointers, passing Deanna Mayza (13-17) for third all-time in program history.
  • Freshman Sierra Smith finished with a career-high eight rebounds.
  • Junior Sierra DaCosta matched a season-high with four assists 
  • Bianca Boggs registered a game-high six steals for William and Mary, while Victoria Reynolds, Gabby Rogers and Hodgson all recorded three.
