THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford head softball coach Angie Churchill earned her first victory at the helm of the Hawks program as Hartford defeated St. Bonaventure, 3-2 before falling to George Mason, 13-0 on Friday morning.

GAME 1:
  • The Hawks opened the season with a big first inning. After freshman Nicolette Barranger reached first base on a fielder's choice, junior Kylie Dazalla singled to advance Barranger to second. Freshman Jennifer Johnson later drove Barranger home with a sacrifice fly to center field before Dazalla scored on a wild pitch, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
  • The Bonnies quickly responded in the bottom half of the opening frame. Alexandra Piergustavo capitalized on a pair of walks to open the inning, singling in St. Bonaventure's first run of the game. Later that inning, the Bonnie struck again, this time off a wild pitch to knot the game up at 2.
  • Barranger struck again in the second inning, belting a single that drove home freshman lily Sencer, who reached on a one-out walk.
  • After St. Bonaventure knotted the game back up at three in the sixth inning, Freshman Danielle Rocheleau was hit by a pitch and later driven in by a Johnson in the seventh frame, giving the Hawks the 4-3 decision.

GAME 2:
  • George Mason started the scoring early, scoring three runs off three hits in the opening inning.
  • The Patriots bats would stay hot, tacking on six runs in the third inning and ultimately taking the 13-0 decision.
