Hawks fall to Charleston Southern, 6-2.

THE LEAD:
 
The University of Hartford team fell to Charleston Southern, 6-2, on the final day of the Willie Jewell's Invitational in Charleston on Sunday afternoon.   

Freshman Nicolette Barranger went 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the loss while sophomore Isabella Gerone only giving up a pair of hits and one earned run in three innings inside the circle.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Bianca Ross threw two innings, only giving up a single hit before the Buccaneers caught fire in the bottom of the third. Meghan Gagliano led off the frame with a bunt single and was driven in off an Annie Bakenus two run home run to put Charleston Southern up 2-0.
  • The Buccaneers bats stayed hot, as a walk and single set up a three-run shot by Nina Del Rio, giving them a 5-0 lead.
  •  Charletson Southern tacked on one more in the fourth inning before the Hawks mounted a comeback in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Eliza Bomhardt led the inning off reaching on a wild pitch, Sophomore Jillian Fenton then pinch ran for Bomhart and later scored on a throwing error during a senior Elizabeth Newkirk fielder choice.
  • Later that inning, Barrager ripped an RBI single to center field, scoring sophomore Amber Mianti, who reached base on a fielder's choice, cutting the Buccaneers lead to 6-2.
  • The Hawks threatened again in the top of the seventh, putting on the corners with two outs, but Charleston Southern held on to take the 6-2 decision.
 
NEXT ON TAP:
The Hawks travel to Baltimore, Md., to take part in the Coppin State Eagle Classic next weekend, starting with a 3:30 p.m. tilt with host Coppin State on Friday.
