THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford softball team dropped both ends of its #AESB opening doubleheader against Maine on Saturday afternoon in West Hartford.

Sophomore Amber Mianti blasted her third home run of the season in game one, while sophomore Isabella Gerone only giving up two earned runs in seven and a third innings of work in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1
  • The Hawks and Black Bear pitchers had firm control of the game for the opening couple of innings before Maine broke through in the third. After Shanna Scribner was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Maine used small ball to work her to third. Laurine German laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt to drive Scribner in, giving the Black Bears a 1-0 lead.
  • Maine added one more in the fourth, as Alyssa Derrick smoked a solo shot to right center.
  • A Scribner RBI single and German bases two-run triple in the sixth extended Maine's lead to 5-0, but the Hawks would not give up. Senior Alex Saharek lead off the seventh with a double to right center, then was pinch ran for by freshman Kiana Harris. Mianti laced a two-run homer, scoring Harris to bring the Hawks within three, but the comeback bid fell short as Maine took the 5-2 decision.

Game 2
  • Hartford's Gerone and Maine Kyleigh O'Donnell were engaged in a competitive pitcher's duel, only giving up 11 combined hits and no runs in the first seven innings.
  • The Hawk threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Mianti started with a leadoff single through the right side, before sophomore Madison Hilimire was hit by a pitch. Saharek laced a ball to Laurine German, who made an impressive catch and stepped on second to end the threat.
  • A pair of Black Bear singles set up a Maddie Decker sacrifice bunt, putting Maine on the board and taking a 1-0 lead. They would add one more off a Derrick sacrifice fly, extend their lead to, 2-0.
  • The Hawks threatened in the bottom half of the frame, having two on with two out, but could not capitalize.

NEXT ON TAP:
The Hawks will close out their series with the Black Bears tomorrow with an 11 p.m. tilt.
