THE LEAD:
Â
The sixth-seeded University of Hartford women's basketball team stormed back from a double-digit, fourth-quarter deficit to knock off third-seeded Binghamton in overtime, 72-68, in the quarterfinal round of the America East Championship on Saturday night. Trailing by 12 points late in the fourth, the Hawks ended the game on a 26-10 run to come back for the win.
Â
Senior Darby Lee, who scored nine of her game-best 22 points in the final 4:30 of regulation, added 12 rebounds to finish with a double-double. Classmate Janelle Harrison also compiled a double-double on 13 points and 10 rebounds while junior Lindsey Abed rounded out the Hawks' top scorers with 14 points.
Â
Kai Moon led three Bearcats in double figures with 17 points.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Â
- Trailing by double digits for most of the game, the Hawks fell behind by as many as 15 points at 49-34 with 2:27 left in the third quarter.
- With 4:27 to go, Lee rallied for two big plays to spark the Hawks' comeback bid. Finishing a post move under the basket, she pulled Hartford within single digits for the first time since late in the first quarter on a pair of free throws.
- The Hawks continued to chip away, and with 57 seconds left, they made it a one-possession game on consecutive three-pointers from senior Mary Pattison and junior Kelly Douglass.
- Moon would extend the lead back to five from the free-throw line with 48 seconds to go, but with 15 seconds left, Harrison drilled a triple from the top of the key to make it a two-point game at 63-61.
- Following the three, Hartford called for timeout, and out of the break, Pattison tipped the ensuing inbounds pass toward Douglass, who finished right under the basket to knot up the score with eight seconds on the clock.
- Binghamton drew up one final play to tie up the game, but Moon's jumper out came up short to force overtime.
- The teams traded buckets to open the extra period, and with 78 seconds remaining, Abed extended a one-point Hawks' lead to four with a three-pointer. Rebecca Carmody would pull Binghamton within two inside the final minute, and following an empty possession for Hartford, Alyssa James had a chance to tie up the score from the free-throw line with four seconds left. She came up empty on both attempts, allowing Abed to seal the victory with a pair of makes from the line in the final seconds.
