THE LEAD:
A three-run seventh inning lifted the University of Hartford softball team past Fairfield, 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon in Fairfield.
Freshman
Danielle Rocheleau laced a two-run double down the left field line, later being driven in by a sacrifice fly from senior
Alex Saharek in the seventh inning to put the Hawk up, 6-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Hawks opened the game up in a big way, scoring a pair of runs in the opening frame. Freshman Nicollette Barranger ripped a one-out single before advancing to third off a Rocheleau walk and wild pitch. Barranger later scored on a wild pitch before Rocheleau also crossed the plate on a passed ball.
- The Stags scored one in the third and the fifth before a two-run homer in the sixth put them ahead, 4-2.
- The Hawks showed their resiliency in the seventh, as Rocheleau laced a two-run double down the left field line, later being driven in by a sacrifice fly from senior Alex Saharek in the seventh inning to put the Hawk up, 6-5.
- Senior Bianca Ross shut down the side in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Hawks the 5-4 decision.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- With the victory, the Hawks have the most program wins since 2013.
- Ross now sits in first with the most single-season saves in program history with four.
