NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Hartford softball swept the Saturday afternoon doubleheader with instate rival Central Connecticut, 9-7 and 10-9, in non-conference action.
Freshman Julia Kocenski wrapped up the day with five RBI and her second win of the season in the circle, as the Hawks improve to 3-7 on the season. With the two losses, the Blue Devils and fell to 6-9 on the year.
GAME ONE: HARTFORD 9 CENTRAL CONNECTICUT 7 (9 INNINGS)
After Central Connecticut ran out to a 4-1 lead in the first two innings, Hartford answered scoring two runs in the third to cut the Blue Devils' lead to one (4-3). Highlighting the inning was a RBI double by freshman
Paige Fedak and and a RBI single from Kocenski.
Central Connecticut pushed its lead back to the two in the third (5-3) and then kept it that way in the fifth (6-4) before the two teams knotted the score at seven forcing extra innings. The Hawks then manufactured runs in the top of the ninth as Fedak and freshman
Emma Curry both scored to five Hartford the 9-7 leads.
GAME TWO: HARTFORD 10 CENTRAL CONNECTICUT 9
Much like the first game, the Hawks' bat came alive in the third inning, turning a two-run deficit into a three run lead at 5-2. Sophomore
Danielle Rocheleau provided to the power in the innings, crushing a three-run home run. The Blue Devils answered back in the bottom of the third with five more runs to take the lead back, 7-5.
Central Connecticut held onto the two-run lead heading into the sixth inning before Kocenski unloaded the bases with one swing of her bat to give the Hawks the 10-8 lead. The Blue Devils got one run back in the bottom of the seventh, but Hartford slammed the door, scoring its second straight win, 10-9.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Kocenski (2-4) went the distance in game one for her second win and earned her first save of the season in game two, allowing six earned runs on 14 hits and striking out three
- Junior Isabella Gerone (1-2) scored her first win of the season in game two, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on two hits and striking out one
- With four more hits, including another home run, Rocheleau continued her torrid start to the season, leading the America East in batting average (.667), slugging (1.100) and OBP (.645)
