JACKSONVILLE, Fla.–Victor Shapovalov became the second male in Hartford track and field history to compete at the NCAA Division I East Regional Championships this past weekend. A sophomore, Shapovalov finished in 36th place in the javelin at the event, which was held in Jacksonville, Fla.

Shapovalov, who entered the meet as the No. 42 seed in the East Region, recorded a throw of 59.54-meters in his final attempt to finish 36th among the field of 48. A native of Feeding Hills, Mass., he qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships after launching the javelin a program-record 63.65-meters at the Adidas Winthrop Invitational, which was hosted by Winthrop University earlier this spring. 
 
Shapovalov put together a solid sophomore campaign, finishing in the top-five in each meet he competed in. Recording three-straight victories to kick off the season, he paced the Hawks at the America East Championship with a second-place finish in the javelin (62.48-meters) before he went on to earn All-New England honors by taking third with a throw of 62.63-meters.
 
Shapovalov was the second Hartford male in program history to compete at the NCAA East Regional Championship. Last season, junior Terrel Davis became the first-ever male to reach the postseason, as he qualified for the long jump after recording a then-school-record breaking leap of 7.61-meters.
