Hawks' Fourth Quarter Rally Falls Short in 72-71 Loss at New Hampshire

DURHAM, NH — A 17-4 fourth quarter run was not enough, as the Hartford women's basketball team fell to America East for New Hampshire, 72-71, on the road at Lundholm Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hawks fell to 0-15 on the year and 0-2 in the America East, while the Wildcats improved to 4-10 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.

With the two sides tied at 6-6 midway through the first quarter, the Wildcats outscored the Hawks 12-7 to take an 18-13 lead into the second quarter. After falling behind 21-13 in the second quarter, the Hawks used the final 6:02 of the half to go on a 16-6 run to take a 29-27 lead into the break. During the run, the Hawks forced the Wildcats to go 1-for-9 from the field.

After Hartford pushed its lead to 36-32, New Hampshire responded with a 19-5 run to take a 51-41 lead with 2:38 to go in the third quarter and took a 57-47 lead into the fourth. After falling behind as much as 64-51 with 7:33 left in the contest, the Hawks went on a 17-4 run to tie the contest at 68-68 with 1:42 left in regulation.

Trailing 70-68 with less than 30 seconds left, Carmen Villalobos drilled a three-pointer from the corner to give the Hawks a 71-70 lead with 15 seconds remaining. However, Ashley Storey scored a layup with four seconds remaining and held on for the 72-71 win over Hartford.
