WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Freshman
Paula Maurina scored a team-high 12 points in her collegiate debut as the Hartford women's basketball team fell to Maine, 85-57, inside Reich Family Pavilion in its season opener Tuesday afternoon. With the defeat, the Hawks open the season at 0-1 in the America East, while the Black Bears improved to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference-play.

The Hawks held an early 7-5 lead over the Black Bears, before Maine used the final 6:33 of the quarter to go on a 16-7 run and carry a 21-14 advantage into the second quarter. Maine opened the second quarter with another rally, scoring seven of the first nine points to push its lead to 28-16 and force a Hartford timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Hawks were able to trim the deficit to 10 after back-to-back buckets from Maurina and senior Jada Lucas. However, the Black Bears used the final 3:10 of the half to put together 12-2 run, which resulted in a 20-point lead at the break.
Maine kept its foot on the gas out in the second half, outscoring Hartford 16-9 in the first 6:40 of the third to push its lead to 58-31. After the Hawks cut the deficit down to 21 points in the fourth quarter the Black Bears went on a 18-5 run, pushing the lead to 34 points, their largest of the game.The deficit proved to be too much as Hartford eventually fell, 85-57.
