Women's Hoops Defeats America East Champs Stony Brook in Season Finale, 70-67

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. —  Head coach Morgan Valley earned the first win of her career, as the Hartford women's basketball team defeated America East regular season champions Stony Brook at home, 70-67, inside the Reich Family Pavilion in the Hawks' season finale on Wednesday evening. 

Jada Lucas led Hartford with 20 points, while Carmen Villalobos added 16 points and six rebounds. With the win, the Hawks close the season at 1-28 and 1-15 in the America East, while the Seawolves fell to 25-3 on the season and 13-2 in conference play.

HARTFORD 70, STONY BROOK 67
The Hawks used the first 6:27 of the contest to go on a 17-5 run, powered by six points apiece from Carmen Villalobos and Jada Lucas. However, the Seawolves used the final 3:05 of the quarter to go on a 9-0 run, cutting Hartford's lead to 17-14 entering the second. After Stony Brook took an 18-17 lead, Hartford responded with a 23-6 run to take a 40-24 lead. The Seawolves countered with a 10-1 run of their own to cut the Hawks lead to 41-34 entering the half. 

Stony Brook used the opening 3:08 of the half to go on a 9-2 run, tying the game at 43-43. The two sides traded points, with the Seawolves taking a 50-49 lead into the fourth quarter. Stony Brook used a 6-0 run to open the fourth quarter, pushing its lead to 56-49 with 8:42 to go in the contest. The Hawks responded with a 20-6 run to take a 69-62 lead with 1:59 left in regulation. The Seawolves cut the Hawks' lead to as close as three, but Hartford held on in the final seconds to secure the 70-67 win.

  • Lucas scored 13 of her 20 points in the first half
  • Villalobos scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half
  • Azariah Wade added 11 points in the win
  • With her five rebounds, Smith ends the season with 207 rebounds which is the most by a Hawk in a single season since the 2014-15 campaign
  • After posting 20 points, Lucas closes the season with 373 points which leads the team
  • Lucas' 373 points this season marks the fourth straight season that the Hawks' leading scorer tallied 370+ points on the season
