HUNTSVILLE, Texas—Graduate student
Jada Lucas dropped a team-high 15 points while as the Hartford women's basketball team fell, 88-65, to Sam Houston on Saturday night. The Hawks dip to 0-4 on the young season while the Bearkats improve to 3-2.
SAM HOUSTON 88, HARTFORD 65
Sam Houston opened the game strong, jumping out to an early 10-2 lead. The Hawks would respond with a 4-0 run of their own after baskets from
Sophie Benharouga and
Nina Farkic. The Bearkats extended their lead to 11, taking a 19-8 lead with two minutes remaining in the quarter. The Hawks would close the gap in the final minutes as
Jada Lucas drained a three followed by a midrange jumper as Hartford trailed, 22-15, after one. The second quarter featured an offensive outburst from
Paula Maurina. Maurina scored the Hawks first seven points of the second stanza and her offensive output cut the Bearkats lead to 28-20 with six minutes remaining in the half. Hartford would play outstanding defense in the second quarter, shutting out Sam Houston for the final 3:26.
Marisa Lee made a three pointer in the closing minute as the Hawks entered the halftime break down, 36-29.
The second half started with both sides trading baskets before Sam Houston began to pull away, utilizing a 7-0 run to take a 49-35 lead. The Hawks fought back as back-to-back three pointers from
Abby Streeter and
Jada Lucas cut the gap to 12, but Sam Houston finished the third quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 63-45 lead. Sam Houston opened the fourth on a 7-0 run, but the Hawks responded with a 10-0 run, featuring back-to-back Streeter threes. However, the deficit was too much to overcome as the Hawks fell to Sam Houston, 88-65.
