Women's Hoops Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short Against UMass Lowell

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Sophomore Paula Maurina scored a team-high 15 points as the Hawks fourth-quarter comeback came up short, dropping a 64-57 decision to UMass Lowell on Monday evening. Hartford falls to 2-18 overall and 2-7 in conference play while the River Hawks improve to 7-10 overall and 4-4 in the America East. 
 
UMASS LOWELL 64, HARTFORD 57
Hartford started the game strong, taking an early lead after a Maurina bucket.  UMass Lowell would fire back, taking a 10-4 lead at the 6:13 mark. Hartford would not go down easy, using a Jabria Ingram layup and an Abby Streeter three to cut the gap to one, 10-9. The Hawks would retake the lead after a pair of Brianna Williams free throws, but the two sides traded baskets to be deadlocked, 14-14 with 2:17 left in the first. The Hawks would use a 4-2 run late, capped off by a Maurina layup to lead, 18-16 after one. The second quarter would be a battle as both teams continued to go back-and-forth. Hartford would take a three-point lead, 24-21, after another Maurina layup with 7:22 left to go in the half. The River Hawks would start to pull away, gaining a five-point advantage, 35-30, at the 4:03 mark. A Lya Farcy layup would close the gap to three, but UMass Lowell would enter the halftime break up, 38-32.
 
UMass Lowell would extend its lead in the third quarter to as much as 12, before a Brianna Williams layup pulled the Hawks back within single digits, 45-36 midway through the third. A few moments later, Maurina would sink a three to cut the River Hawks lead to 46-39. Hartford would continue to claw its way back, as Najla Cencunjanin drained a triple, cutting the deficit to 47-45 at the 1:44 mark. A pair of Ingram free throws pulled the Hawks back within one, 50-49, but a late three saw UMass Lowell lead, 53-49, entering the fourth quarter. Both teams went cold at the start of the fourth quarter as the River Hawks extended its lead to 58-51 with 4:42 left in the game. An Abby Streeter three saw the Hawks get as close as four, 58-54, but UMass Lowell would close the game out, taking home a 64-57 victory.

  • The Hawks outshot the River Hawk from the floor however, 42.6 percent compared to 42.0 percent
