Softball Takes Down Fairfield in Midweek Contest at Home

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Hartford softball team took down Fairfield, 5-3, this afternoon. Propelling the Hawks to the win was Mara Sczecienski, who blasted a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth. With the victory, Hartford moves to 8-7 on the season, while Fairfield falls to 5-13.

HARTFORD 5, FAIRFIELD 3
Fairfield got off to a hot start in this afternoon's match-up, taking the lead in the top of the first inning, 1-0. Caylee English and Katie Kudlacik were locked in a pitcher's duel up until the fourth inning where the Hawks were able to pour on the offense. The Hawks scoring began after Emma Curry and Julianna Kocenski were able to reach base by drawing a walk and reaching on an error by the Stags' shortstop. Samantha Nagel was able to capitalize on the scoring opportunity, bringing both runners home on a bloop single down the right field line. After back-to-back walks drawn by Paige Fedak and Haley Cassidy, Olivia Wolk, the team leader in RBIs, stepped up to the plate. Wolk lined a single up the middle, plating Nagel from third and extending the Hawks lead to 3-1. Fairfield was able to answer right away in the top of the fifth tying the game up at three. In the bottom half, Kocenski drew her third walk of the game to lead off the inning. In the next at-bat, Sczecienski launched a first pitch two-run homerun over the left field fence, retaking the lead for Hartford, 5-3. The deficit would be too much for Fairfield to overcome and mount a comeback as Hartford earned their eighth win on the season with a final score of 5-3.
