ORONO, Maine. — Junior
Carmen Villalobos scored a team-high 13 points, as the Hartford women's basketball team's season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion, dropping a 63-49 decision at Maine. The Hawks close out its season with a 4-26 mark overall. The Black Bears, who were led by 21 points from Caroline Bornemann.
MAINE 63, HARTFORD 49
After Maine scored the opening bucket,
Paula Maurina sunk a triple to give the Hawks an early 3-2 lead. The Black Bears utilized an 8-0 run, taking a 10-3 advantage at the 5:49 mark. Hartford cut Maine's advantage, using a
Lya Farcy three and a Maruina layup to pull within two, 10-8. Maine would extend its lead back to five, but a late Villalobos jumper saw Hartford trail, 15-12 after one.
Jabria Ingram kept the Hawks momentum going in the second quarter, scoring a quick jumpshot to pull the Hawks within one, 15-14. However, the Black Bears responded with a 9-0 stretch, jumping out to a 24-14 lead at the 6:29 mark. The Hawks fought back, using a 7-0 stretch, featuring five points from Maurina, to get back within four, 27-23. Hartford would get even closer, utilizing a Villalobos triple with four seconds remaining to enter the halftime break down, 29-26. The Hawks shot 42.5 percent (9-of-20) from the field in the first half and 60.0 percent (3-of-5) from beyond the arc.
Ingram would pull the Hawks within two early in the second half after a made layup. The Black Bears would respond with a 6-0 run, but an Ingram three-pointer cut Maine's lead to 35-31 at the 6:35 mark. After Maine established a double-digit lead,
Abby Streeter would sink her first triple of the night, pulling the Hawks back within single-digits, 45-38. The Hawks would get even closer, making it a six point game after
Brianna Williams knocked down a three-pointer of her own as Maine entered the fourth quarter up, 49-43. Streeter would keep it at six-point game after making a pair of free throws, making the score 51-45 with 8:04 remaining. The Hawks would go cold however, not making another basket until the 4:02 mark as Ingram sunk a stepback jumper. The deficit would ultimately prove to much for the Hawks as Maine took home a 63-49 victory.
