Clavette Highlights USTFCCCA Academic Awards

NEW ORLEANS — Junior Anthony Clavette of Hartford's men's track and field team was named an U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Athlete, the organization announced. In addition, both of the Hawks' men's and women's squads earned All-Academic Team honors after enjoying another successful stint in the classroom.

Clavette becomes the second male student-athlete in program history to earn All-Academic Athlete distinction, joining Terrel Davis ('21). The honor also marks the third consecutive year that a member of the men's or women's track and field teams has received All-Academic Athlete distinction. The All-Academic Athlete honor is awarded to student-athletes who have a cumulative GPA above 3.25 and are ranked within the top 96 in any championship individual event, or in the top 48 in any championship relay event for the most recent season of competition.

"This has always been a goal of Anthony's to get this award and it speaks to his ability to be a model student-athlete," said head coach Stacie Wentz, who concluded her fifth season at the helm of the Hawks. "Not only did Anthony qualify for the award by qualifying for the first round of NCAA Championships in outdoor track, he also has a near-perfect GPA in computer science.  His teammates, our assistant coaches, and I are so proud of him and his achievements.  He had a fantastic year!"

Posting a 3.97 GPA as a computer science major, Clavette earned America East All-Academic Team honors for the second year in a row. A native of Scarborough, Maine, he had a stellar season competing in the high jump for the Hawks, where he would take home the victory in all but two outings. The junior was crowned New England Champion after taking home the gold at the NEICAAA Championships with a school-record height of 2.08m.

Clavette capped off an outstanding outdoor campaign by qualifying in the high jump for the NCAA Division I East Regional, where he finished tied for 33rd in the event, besting four fellow New England student-athletes. In qualifying, the junior became the fifth student-athlete for Hartford to compete in an NCAA meet within the past three years.

In addition to Clavette's individual award, both the men's and women's track and field teams garnered All-Academic Team honors, which recognizes teams that have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.

"Our philosophy within the program has always been to try to create an equal balance of academics and athletics," Wentz said. "Each year members of team want to set new personal records in the sport, but they always want to achieve their GPA. We are constantly talking about team and individual goals in many of our meetings and make sure each member has an academic goal.  Collectively this allows our team to have great success in the classroom while being great student-athletes."

Hartford's women's track and field team, which posted a 3.60 cumulative GPA in 2021-22, the 33rd best GPA among all Divison I teams, extends its All-Academic Team honors to five consecutive seasons with this year's award. A total of four women (Clodagh Corcoran, Hannah D'Orso, Sarah Kulpa and Hannah Perkins) are coming off perfect 4.0 GPAs this past semester.

The men's track and field squad takes home All-Academic Team distinction for the fourth time in Wentz's five years as head coach after posting 33rd-best GPA among all Division I teams in the nation (3.40). Seven men, including Clavette, Cole Cayer, Luke Fehrman, David Gardner, Uchenna Duru, Alex Fotakis and Nelson Wyatt Jr., highlighted the academic success by earning 4.0's this past semester.
