Serrano's walkoff highlight doubleheader split

In a pair of games that could have gone either way, the University of Hartford softball team split a home doubleheader with Siena Saturday at the Hartford Softball Field.

GAME ONE: HARTFORD 3, SIENA 2
Sarah Serrano snapped a 12-at-bat hitless streak in walk-off fashion as her first double of the season drove home Taylor Fitch as the Hartford Hawks claimed the first game of the doubleheader, 3-2.

Pinch hitter Emily Coffey opened the inning with a walk, and Fitch – who reentered to run for Coffey – moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Nevaeh Terrell. It set the stage as Serrano laced a double into right-center field for the win.

Hartford got on the board in the bottom of the first inning as Olivia Wolk smacked a triple into right field, and was on the backend of a two-out double steal to give the Hawks the lead.
After Siena got an individual run in the third inning, Hartford responded with a single run in the fourth. Mara Sczecienski got it going with a one-out double and scored on a single by Mikayla Gordon.

A two-out, pinch-hit single enabled Siena to temporarily pull even.

Lauren Card, 3-1, struck out a career-high seven batters in hurling her second complete game of the season. She allowed two runs, one earned, while scattering seven hits.

Five different Hawks registered hits as Hartford recorded three extra-base knocks in the win.

GAME TWO: SIENA 5, HARTFORD 4
Hartford loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning placing the tying run 60 feet away, but couldn't quite get the equalizer in falling, 5-4.

Sczecienski was hotter than fish grease, coming up a triple shy of the cycle, with her 4-for-4 performance. She scored two runs with three RBI.

The Hawks took the early lead thanks to a Sczecienski homer in the bottom of the first inning and an RBI single in the third.

Siena's lone scoring inning came as the Saints put up five runs in the fourth inning. A three-run error broke the 2-2 tie and scored what would be the winning run.

However, Hartford didn't go without a fight.

After Wolk led the fifth off with a single, the scorching hot Sczecienski doubled her home.

The senior then was at the beginning of the rally in the seventh as she drilled a one-out double. A single and a walk loaded the bases for the Hawks, and Sczecienski came around to score on a groundout. Another walk reloaded the bases, but another groundout ended the threat.

Kelsey Galevich finished the game 2-for-4.

Caylee English, 2-6, allowed five runs – three earned – on eight hits over seven innings. She added four strikeouts and three walks.

INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES
  • It was a career-high four hits in a game for Sczecienski as the second baseman extended her hitting streak to seven games, raising her batting average to .380.
  • Emily Coffey walked four times in five plate appearances in the three-game series. Two of those walks came in the second game of the doubleheader. Coffey leads the team with nine walks on the season.
