ALBANY, N.Y. - The Hartford women's basketball team dropped a road contest on Saturday falling to Russell Sage College by a 64-50 final.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks got the first basket of the game as freshman Allie Shenloogian (Park Ridge, N.J.) finished a layup, however the Gators would nine of the next 11 points to lead 9-4 after six minutes. Senior Paige Loughman (Bernardston, Mass.) finished a layup to stop the run. Freshman Gabrielle Matthews (Raleigh, N.C.) finished an old fashioned three-point play to cut the lead to 11-9 with 2:18 to play. Sage took a 13-10 lead headed into the second quarter.
- The Gators scored the first six points of the second quarter leading by nine points. Junior Ava Naszimento (Secacus, N.J.) kick started a six-point spurt for Hartford as the deficit hit 19-16 with 4:35 to play in the half. After a pair of buckets for the home team, the Hawks would come all the way back to even the score at 23-23 with a huge three-pointer hit by junior Sidnee Bowden (Canton, Ohio). The Gators took a 26-25 lead into halftime.
- Naszimento gave Hartford the lead out of halftime scoring in the paint on back-to-back possessions. The game was tied at 31-31 again in the third with Hartford storming ahead with a 6-0 run capped off by a jumper for junior Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.). The Gators would hang around, but Hartford would take a 43-39 lead into the final quarter.
- Junior Taryn Blevins (St. Louis, Mo.) would hit a huge three to keep Hartford in front 46-44 with 8:55 to play, but the Gators would go on a 19-2 run over the remaining nine minutes. Matthews would get a jumper with 20 seconds to play, but Hartford would lose 64-50.
Inside The Numbers:
- Naszimento led the offense for Hartford scoring 17 points (6-14 FG, 5-6 FT) to go with nine rebounds and three steals. Matthews scored nine points (4-12 FG, 0-2 3PT, 1-3 FT), while Shenloogian added four points (2-11 FG, 0-2 3PT, 0-2 FT), five steals, three assists and two boards.
- Layla Acosta led the Gators scoring 14 points (5-13 FG, 2-6 3PT, 2-2 FT) to go with eight boards. Kallie Hopkins added 13 points (6-9 FG, 1-2 FT), eight rebounds and three assists in the win.
- The Hawks were outscored in the fourth quarter 25-7 in loss while only shooting 29.7% (19-64) from the floor compared to 44.4% (24-54) for Russell Sage.
