NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Hartford women's basketball team fell in the second game of the Tyler Tip-Off dropping the contest to #4 Smith College by a 74-41 margin.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks had an early 5-3 lead as junior Taryn Blevins (St. Louis, Mo.) netted a triple and junior Ava Naszimento (Secaucus, N.J.) finished a paint layup. The score would remain the same until the Bears woukld score a layup and a pair of free throws late in the first quarter. Senior Paige Loughman (Bernardston, Mass.) would respond, followed by a jumper by Naszimento as the Hawks evened the score at 9-9. After a free throw by Hartford, junior Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) would score five points to close the quarter as the Hawks led 15-11.
- The Bears would get the first six points in the second to take the lead quickly stopped by a finish for Naszimento. Ava would get two more baskets for the Hawks in the quarter, but Smith College would score 22 points as a team to take a 33-21 lead into the break.
- The Bears started the third quarter with an 8-2 run to extend the lead to 41-23. Marchesani would stop the run with a three-pointer to kick start a 8-0 run to cut the game back to just 10 points. Smith responded with the final nine points of the quarter to lead 50-31 into the final 10 minutes.
- Loughman kicked off the fourth quarter with a bucket, but the Bears would 11 of the next 14 points to extend the lead to 25 points. Blevins would net a jumper to stop the run, but Smith would get six points back quickly. The Bears would pull away winning 74-41.
Inside The Numbers:
- Naszimento led the Hawks scoring 15 points (7-10 FG, 1-3 FT) to go with six boards. Ava was later named to the Tyler Tip-Off all-tournament team.
- Marchesani finished the day in double-digits again pouring in 13 points (5-12 FG, 3-7 3PT) to go with a steal. Blevins added seven points (2-8 FG, 1-7 3PT, 2-2 FT) and seven rebounds.
- Maggie Fleming led the Bears with 18 points (6-7 FG, 4-4 3PT, 2-2 FT) and two assists. Uta Nakamura added 10 points (4-6 FG, 2-2 FT), five rebounds, five steals and three assists in the win.
- The Bears owned a 29-6 advantage off of turnovers, while also having a 23-6 fast break points margin.
