MILTON, Mass. - The Hartford women's basketball team improved to 8-7 on the year on Wednesday defeating Curry College by a 60-55 final. With the win the Hawks have now won five in a row, the longest winning streak for the program since 2018-19 when Hartford won seven games in a row from February 16th - March 10th.
Rapid Recap:
- The Hawks jumped ahead 9-4 as junior Taryn Blevins (St. Louis, Mo.) started 2-for-2 with a triple. The teams would trade baskets with Hartford holding a 13-10 lead, junior Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) would catch fire over the next couple of minutes scoring the next six points for the visitors as the lead grew to 19-12. Senior Paige Loughman (Bernardston, Mass.) added a layup as the Hawks led 21-15 after the first 10 minutes.
- Marchesani started the second quarter by netting a pair of free throws followed by a finish for junior Ava Naszimento (Secaucus, N.J.) as Hartford held a 27-18 advantage with 7:25 to play in the half. Naszamento added another bucket to keep the lead at nine points, but the Colonels did a good job at chipping away over the final five minutes ending the half on a 7-0 run to trail 31-29 at the break.
- Freshman Allie Shenloogian (Park Ridge, N.J.) started the second half strong finishing a layup as the Hawks led 35-29. Curry would respond with a 8-0 run to get its first lead at 37-35. Freshman Gabrielle Matthews (Raleigh, N.C.) knocked down three free throws to get the Hawks back in front 40-38 with 4:25 to play in the third. Loughman would finish a layup and knock down a shot at the charity stripe as Hartford led 44-41 headed into the fourth.
- Curry would drop in a three to kick off the fourth quarter. Naszimento would score back-to-back buckets following a free throw from junior Lauren Sabia (Simsbury, Conn.) to push the Hawk lead to 49-44. The Colonels would answer with five-straight points to knot the game at 49-49 with 4:34 to play. Curry would take the lead with a pair of free throws, but Naszimento would add a huge bucket to keep the game tied with two minutes to play. Shenloogian followed it up on the next possession finishing an and-one to give the Hawks a 54-51 lead with 1:39 left. The Hawks would close out the rest of the game knocking down free throws to win 60-55.
Inside The Numbers:
- Naszimento was key in the win for the Hawks tallying 12 points (6-12 FG, 0-1 FT), four steals and three boards. Marchesani led the scoring with 16 points (4-10 FG, 1-6 3PT, 7-8 FT) to go with two steals. Sabia netted nine points (3-6 FG, 0-2 3PT, 3-4 FT), six boards and three steals, while Shenloogian added seven points (2-5 FG, 0-1 3PT, 3-3 FT) and two steals in the victory.
- Lauren Morse paced the Colonels with 14 points (5-9 FG, 4-8 3PT), while Kasey Reeves added 14 points (7-14 FG, 0-2 3PT) and six rebounds in the loss.
- Hartford finished with a 18-7 advantage from the free throw line in the win while also holding a narrow 30-28 points in the paint differential.
