Hartford Women's Basketball Falls to Johnson & Wales University in CNE Semifinals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Hartford women's basketball ended its season on Friday night falling to Johnson & Wales University by a 66-46 final in the Conference of New England (CNE) Semifinals. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Wildcats jumped ahead 11-0 over the first seven minutes of game action. Freshman Allie Shenloogian (Park Ridge, N.J.) and freshman Gabrielle Matthews (Raleigh, N.C.) got Hartford on the board with back-to-back buckets. JWU would score the final five points to take a 16-4 lead into the break. 
  • Junior Ava Naszimento (Secaucus, N.J.) would score the first three points of the second quarter, but the Wildcats offense continued to stay strong with a 10-1 counter run. The teams would trade runs to end the first half with Hartford still trailing by a 35-21 margin. 
  • Shenloogian started the third quarter with a jumper, but JWU would go on a 9-2 run to push the lead back to 44-25. Matthews would score five points in the final four minutes, however the Wildcats held a 17 point advantage with 10 minutes to play. 
  • Matthews would knock down another jumper to start the fourth but once again JWU would get the next two buckets. Junior Ella Marchesani (Saddle Brook, N.J.) would score three points, but JWU stayed in control. Shenloogian would add four more late in the fourth as the lead was down to 15 points. JWU would pull away to clinch a spot in the championship game on Sunday. 
Inside The Numbers:
  • Matthews led the team in scoring a career-high 17 points (7-16 FG, 2-3 3PT, 1-2 FT) to go with two boards. Shenloogian tallied 13 points (5-10 FG, 0-3 3PT, 3-3 FT) and four rebounds. 
  • Grace Jaffray led the Wildcats with 17 points (5-11 FG, 2-5 3PT, 5-7 FT) to go with five boards and two assists. Brianne Foley added 15 points (6-8 FG, 0-1 3PT, 3-4 FT) and 15 rebounds.
