WGolf Takes Third at Mt. Holyoke

 

SOUTH HADLEY, MA ? The University of Hartford women's golf team finished third out of 13 teams at the Mt. Holyoke Invitational on Sunday.

The Hawks shot rounds of 329 and 335 over the two-day tournament to finish with a 36-hole total of 664, just one shot out of second place and nine shots behind Amherst College (657) for the overall title. Courtney Mazzei, an individual competitor for Middlebury, took home medalist honors with a one-over round of 73 on the final day to finish at 155.

Leading the charge for Hartford were juniors Paige Gauthier and Kara Sikorski, who each tied for 16th overall. Gauthier shaved one stroke off her first round total to tie her career low round at 82 on Sunday and finish at 165. Sikorski shot 80 on Saturday?the lowest round by a Hartford golfer at the tournament?but wrapped up with an 85 over the final 18 holes.

Freshman Emily Linn was steady for the Hawks in her collegiate debut. She carded rounds of 84 and 87 to finish tied for 28th at 171. Junior Sadie Heald finished two shots back at 173 and tied for 32nd overall. She made up ground on Sunday by posting an 81, bettering her first round effort by 11 strokes.

Senior Megan Claxton tied for 35th overall at 174 but had the highlight of the weekend for the Hawks. On Saturday, she aced the 152-yard par-3 17th hole, the first hole-in-one of her collegiate career. Playing as an individual, freshman Kelsey Walsh rounded out the scoring for the Hawks and tied for 46th overall at 179.

Hartford returns to action on September 27-28 at the Yale Invitational.
