Hawks Top Providence 3-1 in First Ever Dig Pink Match at Hartford

The University of Hartford women's volleyball team snapped a nine-game losing skid with a 3-1 win over the Providence College Friars in the final non-conference match of the season. The match was also the first ever Dig Pink match, where the Hawks teamed up with the Side Out Foundation to help raise awareness and funding for Breast Cancer research.

"Our kids played great tonight on a very special night for Hartford Volleyball and Dig Pink,” said head coach Don Ferguson. “I am very excited with the money that we raised to help support the Dig Pink efforts. I am especially thankful to Providence College for their support in our first ever Dig Pink Event and in helping us raise money for this great cause.”

The Hawks were led by senior Hallie Fullagar who finished tied for the match-high with 14 kills. She finished the match hitting .333 with four errors in 30 total attacks. Fullagar was one of four Hawks to finish with double digit digs. Joining her was sophomore Michelle Cordell and senior Erin Macro, each with 13 kills, while freshman Kami Nethersole finished with 10 kills.

Cordell led all the Hawks hitters with a .400 attack percentage with three errors in 25 total swings. Nethersole also hit well with two error in 29 total attempts for a. 276 hitting percentage. As a team, Hartford finished the match hitting .216 with 59 total kills, 26 errors in 153 attempts.

Four of the Hawks players finished with double digit digs, as three combined for double doubles. Leading the team defensively was Cordell who finished tied for the match-high 14 digs. Senior Maddison Molyneux finished second for Hartford with 13 digs, while Macro added 11 and Fullagar add 10. Junior setter Lindsay Ford finished with 45 assists as she captained the Hawks offense to victory.

Hartford also combined for a team total of 12 blocks. Leading the team was Macro and Ford with four blocks each. Macro finished with two solo blocks and two block assists, while Ford finished with four block assists. Cordell finished the match with three blocks for Hartford.

Dig Pink is a part of the Side-Out Foundation, which is a 501 c3 Non-Profit charity operating under the Dig Pink brand and promotes volleyball events throughout the year to raise money for Breast Cancer translational research and community support services.

This season, Dig Pink has goals of 1,000 college programs across the country joining forces with over 2,000 high school programs to raise over one million dollars. In 2008, 550 programs across the country, raised over $590,000 for Dig for the Cure and Dig Pink. This will be the first year that both will be combined.
