West Hartford, CT – The University of Hartford volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision (25-27, 25-19, 25-19, 25-15) to the UMBC Retrievers in an America East match on Sunday. Hartford was led by its senior hitter Erin Macro who finished with 14 kills. The Hawks fall to 6-12 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, while UMBC wins its conference opener and improves to 9-7 overall.
Macro also led the Hawks in hitting percentage, finishing with five errors in 36 total attempts for a .250 attack percentage. As a team, Hartford hit .106 for the match with 39 kills and 24 errors in 142 total swings. The Hawks best hitting came in the first set where they hit .216 with 13 kills and five errors in 37 total attempts.
Also leading the Hawks hitters was freshman Kami Nethersole and sophomore Michelle Cordell. Nethersole finished with eight kills, while suffering five errors in 30 attempts (.100) and Cordell finished with seven kills, while hitting three errors in 22 total attacks for a .182 hitting percentage.
Junior setter Lindsay Ford finished the match with 29 assists, while adding four kills and seven digs. Senior's Hallie Fullagar and Maddison Molyneux led the team defensively with 13 and 11 digs, respectively. Cordell led Hartford's blocking efforts with three total, one solo block and two block assists. Macro finished the match with two solo blocks for the Hawks.
UMBC was led by Alyssa Lang who finished with a match high 16 kills, one of three Retrievers with double figures in the kills column. As a team, the Retrievers hit .297 with 60 kills and 16 errors in 148 total attempts.
Hartford will continue conference play on Friday, October 9, when they welcome the Albany Great Danes to West Hartford for a 6:00 p.m. match.
