Hanover, NH – The Hartford women's basketball team rebounded from its loss at Providence with a 70-41 win over the Dartmouth Big Green on Sunday afternoon in Hanover. NH. Hartford rookie Alex Hall, making her return to New Hampshire, led all players with 20 points. Hartford improves to 3-1 overall, while Dartmouth falls to 1-2.
The reigning Miss New Hampshire Basketball from Pembroke Academy, Hall, finished 9-of-20 from the field, while grabbing four rebounds and passing for two assists. Hall was one of three Hartford starters to finish in double figures with Diana Delva completing her first double double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards. Erica Beverly rounded out the Hawks leading scorers with 10 points.
Hartford finished the game shooting 40.0 percent from the field (26-of-65), while holding Dartmouth to 28.9 percent shooting (11-of-38). Hartford dominated on the glass, finishing with a 49-23 advantage, while also forcing Dartmouth into 19 turnovers. Hartford also finished with a season high 17 assists, led by Jackie Smith who finished with five.
Dartmouth came out of the halftime break to pull within 13, 41-28, with 10:10 to play in the half, but Hartford answered right back with a 13-3 run to take its largest lead of the game 56-31 with just under six minutes remaining.
Dartmouth answered that Hartford run with a 9-2 run of their own. Six of Dartmouth's nine points in the run came from the free throw line. Despite the run, the Big Green could get no closer than 18 points down the stretch, with Hartford securing the victory with back-to-back three pointers in the final minute from Briana Winston.
Hall, the rookie playing in front of a hometown crowd, secured her first game in double figures in the first 20 minutes, scoring 13 points on 6-of-12 from the field. The first half would be dominated by the Hawks guards, which accounted for 26 of the 35 first half points. The Hawks finished the first half shooting 38.9 percent (14-of-36), while holding Dartmouth to 19.0 percent on 4-of-21.
Hartford opened the game on a tear, scoring 12 of the first 14 points, including the first seven of the game. After the Big Green scored back-to-back baskets, a three pointers and a jumper, the Hawks used a 12-0 run to open up a 24-7 advantage. Ruthanne Dohertyled the Hawks in that run with five points on a pair of layups and a free throw.
The Hawks then secured their largest lead of the half in the final minutes, scoring the final five points on a jumper from Hall, a layup from Ilicia Mathis and a free throw from Amanda Weaver. Hartford's defense also forced the Big Green into a pair of turnovers in the final moments of the half, finishing the stanza with 13 turnovers forced.
Hartford returns home for a a match-up against the Temple Owls for the first meeting since Hartford upset Temple in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The Hawks and Owls are set to tip-off at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 28.
