WGolf Finishes Fifth at Hartford Invitational

 

WEST HARTFORD, CT ? The University of Hartford women's golf team finished fifth out of six teams at the Hartford Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at Rockledge Golf Course.

The University at Albany held off a strong charge from Fairfield University to take home the team title. The Great Danes shot a team round of 325 and finished with a two-day total of 657. The Stags posted a team round of 322 but fell two strokes short of the title at 659. Sacred Heart University (679), Hampton University (688), Hartford (694) and Central Connecticut State University (720) rounded out the field.

Albany's Annemarie Kissane defeated Fairfield's Christiana Destefano on the fourth hole of a sudden death playoff to claim individual medalist honors. Destefano was the only player in the field to break 80 on the day with a 79 (+7) while Kissane posted an 80 (+8). Each finished with a 159 total over the 36-hole event.

After each player made par on the first playoff hole, Kissane lipped out on a five-foot par putt for the win on the second hole. On the third playoff hole, Destefano had a chance for the win but missed an eight-footer for par. The match ended on the next hole?the par-4 18th?when Destefano missed a four-foot putt for bogey to extended the playoff.

Freshman Emily Linn led the Hawks for the second straight day, shooting a round of 84 (+12) to finish tied for 11th at 169. Junior Paige Gauthier tied for 18th overall at 175 while both junior Sadie Heald and senior Megan Claxton tied for 20th at 176. Junior Kara Sikorski rounded out the scoring for the Hawks at 183 and tied for 27th overall.

Three Hartford golfers also competed as individuals. Junior Catie Dillman recorded her top finish of the season (14th) with a total of 172. Freshmen Kelsey Walsh (T-15th) and Marissa Kallaugher (32nd) had 36-hole totals of 173 and 188, respectively.

Hartford will wrap up the spring season at the 2009 America East Championship on April 25-26 at Shaker Ridge Country Club in Albany, NY.
