Hawks Drops Two in Tri-Match, Erin Macro Surpasses 1,000 Kills with 38 Total on the Day

The University of Hartford volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in a tri-match at Columbia. In the early match, Hartford fell in five sets (25-17, 24-26, 25-22, 13-25, 11-15) to the Cornell Big Red. In the final match, the Hawks dropped a four set (19-25, 25-23, 18-25, 13-25) decision to the Columbia Lions, falling to 6-9 overall.

Senior Erin Macro became the first Hawks player to surpass 1,000 kills in a career since 2007 graduate Jennifer Monroy. Macro led the Hawks in both matches, putting down a career-high 22 kills in the opener against Cornell and then surpassed the 1,000 kill mark, while finishing with 16 total kills against the host Lions.

Macro led all players in the opening match and was one of two Hawks in double figures. Freshman Kami Nethersole finished second on the team with 12 kills. Macro finished the match hitting .233 with 12 errors in 43 total attempts, while completing a double double with 13 digs, which tied fellow classmate Sarah Boss for the team lead. Nethersole finished with a .235 hitting percentage with four errors in 34 total attempts.

Junior setter Lindsay Ford led all players in the match with 44 assists, while also leading the Hawks in hitting percentage. She finished with nine kills and only two errors in 19 total attempts. She also completed a double double, finishing with 11 digs.

As a team, the Hawks hit .155 for the match. Their two best hitting sets came in the first and third when Hartford was victorious. In the first set, the Hawks combined for 17 kills and six errors in 36 total attempts for a .306 hitting percentage. They matched that hitting percentage in the third set with 16 kills and five errors in 26 total attempts.

Against Columbia, Macro again led the team with 16 kills, but recorded 11 errors in 41 total attacks, finishing with a .122 hitting percentage. Finishing second on the team was Nethersole who put down eight total kills and had one error in 31 total attempts for a .226 attack percentage.

Ford again led the Hawks with 29 assists, while also leading the teams hitting efforts with only one error in nine attempts for a .444 attack percentage. Boss led the team in digs against the Lions with 15, while Michelle Cordell finished with 14 digs and Ford finished with 12 digs for her second double double of the day.

As a team, Hartford finished the match hitting .097 with 46 kills and 31 errors in 154 total attempts. The Lions finished the match hitting .233 with 47 kills and 16 errors in 133 total attempts. Megan Guaghn led the Lions and all hitters with 17 kills.

The Hawks will play their final of seven-straight road matches when they travel to in-state rival Central Connecticut on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. before opening up conference play on the weekend.
