New Britain, CT – The University of Hartford volleyball team (3-4 overall) came from behind to score s 3-2 victory (25-23, 24-26, 22-25, 25-13, 15-13) over the Manhattan Jaspers to open the second day of play at the CCSU Blue Devils Invitational. The Hawks then dropped the nightcap against the host Blue Devils in three sets (22-25, 16-25, 23-25) to close out the tournament.
Freshman Kami Nethersole led all players against Manhattan with a career-high 16 kills, while sophomore Sydney Scott led all hitters with a .533 attack percentage with 10 kills, and two errors in 15 total attempts. Hartford will close out play at the CCSU Blue Devils Invitational at 6:30 p.m. tonight when they take on the host Blue Devils.
Nethersole and Scott were two of five players who record double digit kills for Hartford. Following Nethersole's game-high 16 was senior Erin Macro who finished with 15. Maddison Molyneuxand Michelle Cordell rounded out the Hawks hitters with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Junior setter Lindsay Ford continues to captain the Hawks offense, posting a career-high 52 assists to lead the Hawks. Defensively, sophomore Danielle Etta also scored a career-high with 24 digs to lead the team and five total players with double figure digs.
Nethersole, Macro and Ford all finished the match with double doubles, the first of the season for any Hawks. Macro was second on the team defensively with 16 digs to go along with her 15 kills, while Nethersole added 15 digs to go along with her 16 kills. Ford added 15 digs to compile her double double, while senior Sarah Boss rounded out the Hawks defensive efforts with 15 digs.
The Hawks blocking efforts were led by Cordell, who finished with seven total blocks, one solo and six block assists. As a team, the Hawks finished with nine total kills, with six total players recording blocks. Scott was second on the team with three block assists.
Against the Blue Devils, Macro led all Hartford players with 16 kills, the only player with double figure kills. She finished with eight errors in 35 total attempts for a .229 attack percentage. Nethersole finished second on the team with nine kills.
Ford once again led the team with 30 assists, while also hitting .444 for the match, finishing with five kills and one error in nine attacks. Etta led the team defensively against CCSU with 22 kills, while Boss added 10. Scott led Hartford's blocking efforts in the final match, finishing with three total, one solo block and two block assists.
As a team, the Hawks finished with a .130 attack percentage with 42 total kills and 25 errors in 131 total attacks. Hartford's best hitting set came in the final set with 16 kills and three errors in 26 total attempts for a .361 attack percentage.
The Hawks return home to take on the Holy Cross Crusaders at 7:00 p.m. on Monday night.
