WEST HARTFORD, CT – The University of Hartford women's soccer team dropped its 2010 season opener by a final score of 2-0 to the Long Island University Blackbirds on Saturday evening. Hartford, who welcomed 267 fans to Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium, falls to 0-1 on the season.
The Hawks were outshot in the game by a 10-3 margin, including not marking one shot on goal, compared to eight for the Blackbirds.
Both of the visitors goals came in the first half, with Ariana Calderon putting up the first score in the 21st minute. She used a bad clear to push an open shot to the lower left corner from 10 feet off the goal line.
Just over three minutes later the Blackbirds Kayleigh Morgan placed a perfect header just out of the reach of Hawks keeper Lauren Brodeur, after receiving the pass off a corner kick from teammate Sarah Laughlin.
Brodeur finished the game with six saves, three in each of the halfs. The Hawks three total shots came from Caroline Dixon (2) and Arielle Aikens (1), with two of the three coming in the second half.
The women's soccer team will return to action on Friday, August 27 when they travel to Philadelphia, PA for a matchup with the Drexel Dragons in the opening round of the Temple Owls Tournament. The Hawks and Dragons are set to tangle at 1:00 p.m.
