Volleyball Splits Matches on Saturday, Nethersole and Cordell Named All-Tourny

HAMDEN, Conn. –
The University of Hartford volleyball team concluded play in the Quinnipiac Tournament splitting a pair of matches on Saturday, defeating St. Peters 3-1 (25-18, 29-27, 13-25, 25-18) and falling to the host Bobcats 3-0 (25-27, 25-27, 25-27). With the split, the Hawks are now 2-9 on the season.

A pair of Hawks hitters were named to the All-Tournament team after leading the Hawks on Saturday. Junior Michelle Cordell finished with a career-high 17 kills in the win over St. Peter's, while sophomore Kami Nethersole finished with 19 kills in the nightcap against the Bobcats.

Both Cordell and Nethersole led all hitters in their respective matches in hitting percentage. Cordell finished with five errors in 41 total attacks for a .293 hitting percentage, while Nethersole finished with four errors in 33 total attacks for a .455 hitting percentage, her highest so far this season.

In the win over St. Peter's, Cordell was joined in leading the team by Nethersole, who finished with eight kills, and Dionna Kirton who finished with seven kills. Cordell also finished with a double digit effort with 16 digs, while setter Lindsay Ford led the Hawks in digs with 17 and assists with 36.

In the nightcap, Nethersole's closest hitter was Cordell and Sydney Scott who each finished with six kills. Defensively against the Bobcats, Danielle Etta finished with a team-high 11 digs, while Scott added 10.

The Hawks opened the Quinnipiac Invitational with a three-set loss to Dartmouth (20-25, 12-25, 21-25) on Friday night. Against the Big Green, the Hawks were led by Kirton, who finished with eight kills.

For the weekend, Cordell led the Hawks with 30 total kills, while Nethersole led the team with a .300 hitting percentage, finishing with 27 kills, over two matches, and nine errors in 60 total attacks.

The Hawks will return to action on Wednesday when they host the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils for the 2010 home opener. The match, which is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m., will be played at the Reich Family Pavilion on the West Hartford, Conn. campus.
