WORCESTER, MA – The University of Hartford volleyball team (1-7 overall), behind four players with double figure kills, defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders in five sets (25-20, 26-24, 24-26, 18-25, 15-13) for the first win in 2010. The Hawks hitters were led by sophomore Kami Nethersole who finished with a career-high 21 kills.
Nethersole led all Hawks hitters with a .291 hitting percentage, committing only five errors in 55 total attacks. Also among the team leaders was freshman Dionna Kirton who finished with a career-high 15 kills and a .250 hitting percentage, six errors in 36 total attacks.
Rounding out the leading hitters was Lindsay Makowicki who finished with a season-high 12 kills, while Sydney Scott added 10 kills. Makowicki also finished with a hitting percentage better than 20-percent, committing six errors total in 28 total attacks.
As a team, the Hawks hit .201 for the match, ending with 70 total kills and 31 errors in 194 total attacks. The Hawks best hitting came in the deciding set when they finished with only two errors and 11 kills in 30 total hits for a .300 hitting percentage.
Senior setter Lindsay Ford collected all but six of the Hawks 66 total assists, setting a new career high. She also led the Hawks defensively, finishing with 22 digs, also a career high.
Danielle Etta also finished with more than 20 digs, setting a new career-high with 21 putbacks. Ford and Etta were two of five Hawks to finish with double figure digs, with Nethersole, Kirton and Scott all compiling double doubles. Nethersole finished with 17 digs, another career best for the sophomore. Kirton finished with 15 digs, while Scott also set a career-high in digs with 13, one shy of her season total in each of the last two years. Scott also led the Hawks with four total blocks, while Makowicki added three.
Holy Cross was led by Megan Lynch, the only Crusader to finish with double digit kills. She finished with 21 kills and a .250 hitting percentage with six errors in 60 total attacks. As a team, Holy Cross finished with a .186 attack percentage with 61 kills and 26 errors in 188 total attacks.
The Hartford volleyball team will return to action at the Quinnipiac Invitational this coming weekend when they join Dartmouth and Saint Peter's in Hamden, Conn. for the three-match tournament. The Hawks will open with Dartmouth on Friday at 4:30 p.m. before taking on Saint Peter's on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and then play the host Bobcats at 7:00 p.m. that night.
