Vestal, N.Y. – The Hartford volleyball team dropped a five set match to the Binghamton Bearcats on Friday night, the third-straight road game as the Hawks end the 2011 season with four in a row on the road. Hartford (12-17, 3-8 America East) was led by four players in double figures with junior outside hitter Kami Nethersoleleading the team with 16 kills.
Nethersole joined an elite group in smashing her 1,000th career kill against Binghamton. The junior needed just 12 kills entering the match and now stands at 1,004 kills entering the final game of the 2011 season. Nethersole is the second player on the squad to pass the century mark this season as rookie setter Jackie Tamburri became just the third player in school history to record at least 1,000 assists in a single season since the start of rally scoring. Tamburri will likely pass Danielle Scoggin for the single season record for assists. Scoggin recorded 1,194 assists in 2002 and Tamburri following a 50 assist game against the Bearcats now stands at 1,188 assists in 2011.
Joining Nethersole in leading the Hawks hitters were senior Michelle Cordell and sophomore Taylor McCreery who each finished with 14, while rookie Sareeta Nethersole chipped in 12 kills. McCreery led the four leading hitters and all players in the match with a .429 hitting average as she hit into just two errors in 28 total attacks. Tamburri also hit well for the Hawks finishing with five kills and one error in 10 attacks for a .400 average.
Defensively, Tamburri was again in the led for Hartford as she completed her fourth match of the season with 20 or more digs, finishing with a match-best 20 against the Bearcats. Tamburri's 20 digs along with her 50 assists is the team leading 20th double double for the Croton-on-Hudson native. Overall, Tamburri led five Hawks in double figures in the defensive category as [Sareeta] Nethersole and senior Danielle Etta finished second with 13 apiece. [Kami] Nethersole contributed 12 while Cordell rounded out the group with 10 digs.
Hartford will close out the 2011 season with a visit to the Albany Great Danes for a Sunday afternoon matinee. The Hawks and Great Danes are schedule for a 2:00 p.m. start at SEFCU Arena.
