BOX SCORE
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford women's tennis team fell to 5-11 on the season with a dual match loss to the Fairfield Stags, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon at the Hartford Tennis Courts. The Hawks will next play on Saturday when they host a pair of conference opponents, Binghamton (9:30 a.m.) and Stony Brook (3:30 p.m.).
The Stags would be forced to be victorious in first and second double in order to win the doubles point as the Hawks' third doubles team picked up a victory by default. The Stags' No. 1 duo of Monica Yajima and Caroline Emhardt scored the first victory with an 8-1 decision over Maggie Sabatino and Ashley Harel. Despite a tough show from the Hawks' Katina Zampas and Nicole Haynal, the Stags took the double point with an 8-3 decision in favor of Alyssa Ruiz and Tori Pirrello.
In singles play, Hartford dropped the top five matches, with the Hawks' only point of the day coming in the No. 6 singles position where Emily Willhoft secured the victory by default. Harel, a rookie, put up a fight in her first set at No. 3 singles against Emhardt. Harel eventually succumbed by scores of 6-3, 6-1.
