WEST POINT, N.Y. – In its 2011 season opener, the University of Hartford volleyball team dropped a three-set conference match (20-25), (22-25), (21-25) at the Army Invitational to host-team Army Black Knights on Friday afternoon at Gillis Field House. The Hawks were led in the match by junior outside hitter Kami Nethersole who finished with a match-high 12 kills. Hartford falls to 0-1 on the young season while Army moves to 1-0.
As a team, the Hawks, hit .148 for the match (35 kills, 18 errors, 115 total attacks), but were out matched as the Black Knights finished with 42 kills, 17 errors in 111 total attacks for a .225 hitting percentage.
Joining Nethersole in leading the Hawks' attack was senior Michelle Cordell and sophomore Lindsay Anderson who added six kills apiece. Defensively, three Hawks registered double digit digs as Nethersole joined rookies Jackie Tamburri and Sareeta Nethersole with 10 digs each while Anderson led the blocking effort with two total. Tamburri also finished with 29 assists while adding a pair of assists and no errors in three total attacks.
Due to potential inclement weather conditions expected to hit the Northeast, changes have been to Saturday's schedule at the Army Tournament. The Hawks will take on Bryant at 9:00 a.m., a match that was originally scheduled for 12:00 noon, and will wrap-up tournament play at 11:00 a.m. with UMKC.
