Alves Goal in 19th Minute Stands Up for 1-0 Road Win at Binghamton

BOX SCORE

Vestal, N.Y. –
The University of Hartford women's soccer team extended its unmatched success with a 1-0 victory against the Binghamton Bearcats at the Binghamton Sports Complex on Thursday night. The Hawks improve to 9-0-2 overall and 2-0 in America East action, Binghamton falls to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

The Hawks came out of the gates firing with a pair of shots in the first five minutes of the game, one forcing Binghamton keeper Carrie Martin into early action. Martin would finish the game with six total saves and allowing just the third goal of the season for the sophomore keeper.

The lone goal of the game came in the 19th minute when junior Caitlin Alves gathered a cross Mary Beth Hamilton in the center of the box about eight yards off the line. Alves sent a low shot to the right of Martin hitting the lower corner of the goal for her fifth goal of the season and what would prove to be her fourth game-winning goal, which now ties her four seventh in the nation in that category. Alves fifth goal of the season now ties her with fellow classmate Amélia Pereira for the team lead, while Hamilton's assist is her fifth of the year which leads the team.

Hawks keeper Erin Quinlan continued her stinginess between the pipes finishing with eight saves. Overall, the Hawks finished with nine shots total with seven of those shots being on the mark. The Bearcats finished the match with 14 shots, five of which came in the final 20 minutes of action as the Bearcats scrambled in an attempt to tie the score. Many of the Bearcats shots came from long range as the Hawks defense kept the home team out of the box the majority of the game. Binghamton did finish the match with a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Hartford returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they welcome the New Hampshire Wildcats to West Hartford for the conference home opener. The Hawks and Wildcats are scheduled to kick off at 2:00 p.m. at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium.
