Hawks Drop Final Two at Sacred Heart Invitational as Nethersole Named to All-Tournament Team

The University of Hartford volleyball team dropped its final two matches of the 2011 Sacred Heart Invitational on Saturday, falling in three sets (25-22, 25-15, 26-24) to the host Pioneers and four sets to the Brown Bears. Junior hitter Kami Nethersole led the Hawks in both matches, finishing the day with 28 kills, the only player to finish with double figure kills for Hartford in either match. Nethersole also represented the Hawks on the All-Tournament team, the second weekend in a row she has earned the honor.

Against Sacred Heart, the Hawks were led by Nethersole's 12 kills, while she also led the way in hitting percentage. She finished the match with five errors in 33 total attacks for a .222 hitting average. She also finished the match one dig shy of a double double adding nine digs. 

Sareeta Nethersole finished second among the Hawks hitters with eight kills while Michelle Cordell closed out the match with six. Overall, the Hawks finished their opening match of the day with a .113 hitting percentage with 33 total kills and 20 errors in 115 total attempts.

Freshman setter Jackie Tamburri continues to play every set for the Hawks, finishing the first match of the day with 27 assists, of the 32 total for the team. She also finished one dig shy of a double double. Leading the way defensively was (Sareeta) Nethersole who finished with 10 digs. Taylor McCreery joined (Kami) Nethersole and Tamburri with nine, while Dionna Kirton finished with eight.

Against Brown, Nethersole finished with 16 kills and almost an identical hitting percentage as the first match, suffering five errors in 48 total attacks for a .229 average. Cordell finished with four kills, while three others finished with three, (Sareeta) Nethersole, Lindsay Anderson and Lindsay Makowicki.

As a team, the Hawks finished the match hitting .080 with 32 total attacks and 22 errors in the 125 total attacks. The Bears finished the match hitting .197 with 51 total kills, led by Maddie Lord and Emma Pastore who matched (Kami) Nethersole's match-high 16.

Tamburri led the Hawks defensively with 11 digs, while putting up 23 assists for her fifth double double of the season. Also among the leaders defensively were McCreery with nine, (Sareeta) Nethersole with eight and Cordell and (Kami) Nethersole with seven each.

The Hawks will return to West Hartford for their next match when they welcome the Holy Cross Crusaders to West Hartford for a 6:00 p.m. match on Wednesday, September 7. Admission is free to the public and the game will also serve as Faculty/Staff Night.
